FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about test and tag and fire safety compliance in Sydney.

Last updated: July 2026

What is test and tag?

Test and tag is the process of inspecting and electrically testing portable appliances to make sure they're safe to use in the workplace. Each item that passes is fitted with a safety tag showing the test date, retest date, and technician details. It's required under Australian workplace safety laws and governed by AS/NZS 3760.

How often does test and tag need to be done?

Test and tag frequency is determined by your specific workplace environment and how prone the equipment is to wear and tear. Under AS/NZS 3760: Construction & demolition sites: every 3 months (due to the harshness of active sites). Hire equipment: before each hire. Factories, workshops & warehouses: every 6 months (production floors, manufacturing areas, assembly workshops). Commercial kitchens & hospitality: every 6 months (high moisture, heat, grease, and heavy cord flexing). Retail, schools & standard offices: every 12 months for equipment with flexible cords prone to movement (vacuum cleaners, shared chargers, kettles). Office static equipment (e.g. office monitors, server rooms): every 5 years.

How much does test and tag cost in Sydney?

Test and tag with Rapid Test & Tag starts at a $120 + GST minimum, which covers your first 30 items and includes everything — testing, tags, and same-day digital reports, with no hidden fees. We charge no call-out fee, unlike many competitors who add one on top of their per-item rate. Pricing depends on item count and site conditions, so call 0422 742 447 for an accurate quote — and we'll beat any competitor's official written quote by 5%.

What do I need to prepare before a test and tag visit?

Very little. Just make sure all portable appliances are accessible and plugged in where possible. We'll work around your schedule and test everything on-site with minimal disruption. If you have a list of equipment or an asset register, that helps but isn't required — we'll create one for you during the visit.

Do you provide compliance certificates?

Yes. We provide same-day compliance certificates with full details of every item tested — including pass/fail results, test dates, expiry dates, and technician details. All reports are digital, audit-ready, and emailed to you on the day of service.

How often do fire extinguishers need to be tested?

Fire extinguishers require routine inspection every 6 months under AS 1851. They also need a more thorough service (including hydrostatic pressure testing) at intervals specified by the manufacturer — typically every 5 years. We track all dates and send automatic reminders so you never miss a deadline.

How much does fire extinguisher testing cost in Sydney?

Fire extinguisher testing with Rapid Test & Tag starts from $11 per item + GST. Our minimum charge is $120 + GST, which covers the first 12 items and includes everything — testing, tags, and digital reports, with no hidden fees and no call-out fee. We'll also beat any competitor's official written quote by 5%.

Do you service all of Sydney?

Yes — we provide on-site test and tag and fire safety compliance across Sydney metro and regional NSW, including Parramatta, Bankstown, Penrith, Campbelltown, Central Coast, Liverpool, Blacktown, Hornsby, and more. There's never a call-out fee. On larger jobs we don't charge travel at all, regardless of distance. For smaller jobs beyond about 30km from the Sydney CBD we may discuss a small travel contribution before we book, so you always know the full cost up front.

Can you do electrical test and tag and fire safety in one visit?

Absolutely — that's what we're known for. We combine electrical test and tag (AS/NZS 3760) with fire safety compliance (fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, fire blankets) in a single visit. One provider, one appointment, one set of reports.

What happens if an appliance fails?

Failed items are tagged with a red 'FAIL' tag and taken out of service immediately to protect your staff. We'll advise whether the item can be repaired or needs to be replaced. This is documented in your compliance report.

What qualifications and insurance do you have?

We're certified in test and tag and fire test and tag, hold a white card, police clearance, and working with children check. We carry $20 million public liability insurance and comply with AS/NZS 3760, AS 1851, AS 2444, and AS/NZS 2293.

How quickly can you come to my site?

Our typical turnaround from quote to service is 1 to 2 days. We respond immediately to enquiries and can often accommodate urgent requests. Call 0422 742 447 for the fastest response.

Do you send reminders for retesting?

Yes. We proactively track your compliance schedule and send automatic reminders before your retesting deadline. You'll never fall out of compliance or miss a due date.

Is test and tag a legal requirement in NSW?

Yes. Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW) and WHS Regulations, employers have a legal duty to ensure all electrical equipment in the workplace is safe and properly maintained. Following the AS/NZS 3760 standard is the universally recognised framework to meet that legal obligation. Failure to comply can result in SafeWork NSW enforcement action, heavy fines, and voided insurance policies.

What is the difference between AS/NZS 3760, AS 1851, and AS/NZS 2293?

AS/NZS 3760 covers portable electrical appliances (test and tag). AS 1851 covers routine servicing of fire protection equipment (extinguishers, fire blankets, and hose reels), while AS/NZS 2293 covers emergency and exit lighting systems. AS 2444 covers the selection and location of portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets. Because most commercial workplaces legally require testing across all of these standards, bundling them into a single technician visit saves you time and reduces call-out fees.

How much does test and tag cost per item?

Test and tag with Rapid Test & Tag starts at a $120 + GST minimum, which covers your first 30 items and includes everything — testing, tags, and same-day digital reports, with no hidden fees and no call-out fee. Beyond that, pricing depends on item count and site conditions, with lower per-item rates on larger jobs. Call 0422 742 447 for a fast, accurate quote — and we'll beat any competitor's official written quote by 5%.

What are the test and tag requirements for construction sites in NSW?

Construction and demolition sites are high-risk environments. Under AS/NZS 3012, portable electrical equipment (power tools, extension leads, power boards, and portable RCD safety switches) must be tested every 3 months (testing performed per AS/NZS 3760). Many construction sites also operate a colour-coded tag system for the current testing period — a widely-used site practice for spotting overdue equipment at a glance, rather than a colour mandated by the standard. Site compliance is strictly enforced, and expired or missing tags can get subcontractors removed from a site.

Do I need test and tag if I run a home-based business?

If you employ staff or have clients visiting your home office, you have the exact same duty of care as any other employer under NSW WHS legislation. If you are a sole trader with no employees or visitors, it isn't strictly mandated by law, but it is highly recommended to protect your home, your equipment, and to ensure your business insurance remains valid in the event of an electrical fire.
