Where the hidden costs hide
A quote that looks cheap on paper can carry several add-ons:
Call-out or travel fees
Some providers advertise a low per-item rate but charge a separate fee just to attend your site — sometimes $100 or more before a single item is tested.
Minimum charges you don't see upfront
A per-item rate is meaningless if there's an undisclosed minimum that applies to small jobs.
Extra charges for tags and reports
The tag on each item and the compliance certificate are the whole point — but some providers bill these as extras on top of the testing rate.
Return-visit fees
If some equipment is missed or in use on the day, coming back can cost you again.
Add these together and a “cheap” quote can end up costing more than a higher per-item rate that includes everything.
How to compare quotes properly
Ask three questions of any quote:
- Is there a call-out or travel fee — and is it already included?
- What's the minimum charge, and what does it cover?
- Are tags, certificates, and reports included in the price, or billed separately?
A provider who answers those clearly is one you can trust to bill you what they quoted.

- Fire extinguisher testing from $11 per item + GST, with the same $120 + GST minimum covering the first 12 items.
